The Rural Blog: 7/24/16

What can help draw rural America out of the recession that lingers in many places, six years after the Great Recession bottomed out nationally? Alan Greenblatt writes for Governing journal, published for those who govern or lobby the states and localities mainly. After that litany of woe, Greenblatt gives an example of local cooperation with inspired leadership: Newport and Lincoln County, Oregon, on the coast about 100 miles southwest of Portland (Wikipedia map). An aquarium is had because of it, a marine science center that’s developed an extremely edible and processable seaweed, basics for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration fleet, and the Oregon coast’s last paper mill, which include benefited from recent investment. The lesson from Lincoln?

All these factors and outcomes didn’t only undermine the real purpose and goal of Communism but added greater hurting and instability in China also. From 1976 onward, after Mao’s death, the ideals of China shifted to a form of “Market – Socialism”. Socialism (similar to Communism) is the politics and financial theory which advocate that the method of production, distribution, and exchange be possessed and controlled by the city. In market socialism, while there is social ownership, the profits generated by the firms are either used to remunerate employees or be distributed among the populace equally in a social dividend.

Through this, China again directed to achieve natural Communism, for relating to Marx, socialism, of any form, is the initial stage of Communism often. However, to be able to boost development, these new ideals were molded to match China’s economy and political situation. This allowed China to open herself to foreign investments/companies, as well as transfer of technology and capital, while at the same time completely using and exploiting its urban and rural labor force.

Hence, despite claiming otherwise, this was a strong shift from traditional communist ideology and ideas. Their try to lure in foreign investments (capitalist elements) allowed these to slowly lift communist/socialist restrictions. This steady influx in assets and capital developed agriculture greatly, industry, technology and science, and the military, four areas of important concentrate for the national authorities, today and have helped to make China the world power that it’s.

Communism, as pertinent to its core nature, prevents a feeling of independence and individual freedom in business dealings. This idea, along with a rise in poverty of the promised decline instead, led to great agitation and students’ protests for specific freedom in 1989. This resulted in resignations from coast to coast, while the seeds of entrepreneurship were steadily sowed.

In recent years, the influx of Western capital and technology, which truly undermines the communist theory, and other factors, has caused the communist ideology to largely fail. Firstly, the state’s ownership of means of production before, along with collectivization of farmlands, didn’t lead to a much better lifestyle for the common people, as observed in the high poverty and death rates. From that Apart, various capitalist forces, brought in through foreign investments, companies, and capital have been powering China’s financial development. Moreover, small systems of local private ownership are growing in China and have been given legal position. This is traced back again to the seeds of entrepreneurship sowed in the 80’s, credited to protests.

As a result of all of this, China’s financial success today is largely due to profits from international trade, ventures, and private sectors, instead of their state possessed/socialist businesses. More importantly, the Marxist-Leninist ideology, and Market-socialism later, that is stated to have been used, are a slim facade shielding the actual Chinese system. While a capitalist overall economy is prospering in urban China, almost 850 million peasants residing in rural areas are created to focus on state-owned land, in order to maintain the country’s notion of socialism. This brings forth a separate in living standards between those working in capitalist, overall economy, and state-employed peasants.
