For decades I put a pulse-rate of 52.” Even today, Morris is often found shuffling and down stairs at the London School up. Since he found out exercise, medical researchers have established that it is good not for the heart but for almost everything just. “Exercise is a universal for health,” Morris likes to say. Right now, most people have got the message.

Some of these even exercise. Did Morris improve the global world by encouraging the habit? Surely he got people to exercise more? Morris is not just a man who likes to spend your time celebrating himself. He uses his own example: until his middle-90s, he was a habitual swimmer (he ceased partly because he was humiliated by people hurrying to help him out of the pool). And, “well, swimming means there has to be pools”. Governments need to build private pools and bike pathways, and pedestrians city centers. In 1994, Morris published a paper arguing, “Physical exercise could be today’s ‘best buy’ in public area’s health for the west.” Hardly anybody listened.

  • Blood glucose must fall below 50mg/dl
  • What are the drawbacks
  • Rheumatism (joint inflammation)
  • With dietary and changes in lifestyle, results can last a lifetime

Now traditional western countries spend growing fortunes curing their obese and inactive residents. Already 10 per cent of the NHS’s budget goes towards diabetes. “For the very first time ever sold,” says Morris, “the mass of the populace has deliberately surely got to take exercise. It’s a new phenomenon, which is not appreciated.” For decades he has tried to persuade government authorities to make exercise easier. He was involved in the pioneering English National Fitness Survey of 1990, which found that half of women aged 55 to 64 could not easily walk a mile.

These people were in place disabled. The federal government disregarded the survey. Since that time, British exercise levels haven’t changed much. His tone of voice becomes high-pitched with outrage: “Consider, what historians in the foreseeable future will say about the true way we’ve allowed this epidemic of years as a child obesity. He’s not going to now stop pressing governments.

“Unfortunately,” he attempts to look sorrowful, “I’m a work addict. It’s an obsession, compulsion. I don’t think it’s a disease. Now, that’s a happy way of getting into old age. It’s better than an alcohol addict or – is there womanizing lovers in old age? He has two big ambitions for authorities: “On the one hand, for the first time, to have a serious program on health inequalities. Not a big program, or a complicated program or an ambitious program, After all the term ‘serious’.” Second, he wants the government to help the new, giant cohort of old visitors to exercise. To Morris, none of them of this is Utopian.
