The system only works because people know when to ignore the rules and when to use the workaround and when to lean on the messy knowledge that lives outside the book. When you replace the messy spreadsheet with the shiny tool you are forcing everyone into a permanent rule-book strike and you are surprised when the work stops moving.
I see this in museum lighting too when the board of directors wants to save money on bulbs. They buy the ones that last forever and they buy the ones that use the least power but those bulbs do not have the warmth of the sun and they do not have the depth of a flame. The paintings look like ghosts of themselves and the visitors walk past without stopping because the light is too honest and the light is too flat. You need the imperfection to see the truth of the art.
When you want to grow a channel or a brand you often feel the need to build a giant machine. You look for the most complex way to do things because you think the complexity means it is better and you think the friction of a big system means you are a real professional. My nose still hurts when I sneeze and it is a reminder that the world is harder than it looks through the glass. I think we should all be a little more suspicious of the things that look too clean and the things that promise to fix our lives with a single click. The real fix is usually a bit more work and the real fix is usually a bit more confusing. We should keep the spreadsheet and we should keep the weird notes and we should keep the Dave-on-Tuesday rule because those are the things that actually keep the lights on.

We are currently living in a time where we worship the interface and we forget the engine. We want the car to be shiny and we want the seats to be leather but we do not care if the engine is made of plastic. Then we take the car out on the highway and we wonder why it melts when we go over 60 miles an hour. The work is the engine and the mess is the oil that keeps the metal from grinding into dust.
I will probably walk into another door one day because I am always looking at the light and I am always looking at the way the shadows fall. I am distracted by the beauty of the imperfection and I am distracted by the way a simple fix can change the whole room. But I will know better next time and I will look for the fingerprints on the glass and I will look for the signs of life. If a place is too clean it is probably empty and if a tool is too perfect it is probably not doing any real work.
The next time someone tells you that they have a new platform that will solve all your problems you should ask them where the notes go. Ask them where you can write down the secret about the cache and ask them where you can put the warning about the Tuesday phone call. If there is no space for the ghosts then you should keep your spreadsheet and you should keep your mess. It is better to have a map that is covered in coffee stains than a map that is perfectly clean but shows the wrong country.

Trust the yellow cells and trust the shadows and trust the bruise on your nose. They are the only things that are telling you the truth about the world.
